When is it appropriate, according to AP style, to capitalize and/or abbreviate street addresses? This is a specific aspect of AP style, which has given me particular trouble. Prior to my experience in journalism, I never paid much attention to the details when writing out street addresses. However, there are very precise rules to follow when writing out proper names of streets and addresses.
A writer should use the abbreviations “Ave.,” “Blvd.” and “St.” only with a numbered address, such as 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. These words should be spelled-out and capitalized when part of a formal street name without a number, such as Pennsylvania Avenue. Finally, they will be lowercase and spelled-out when used alone or with more than one street name: Massachusetts and Pennsylvania avenues.
